Nieuw Amsterdam 2012 - Our First Day at Sea

Today was a relaxing day at sea. Our daughters Kim and Rhodé spent the day at the Lido pool again, swimming and enjoying the excellent staff. We went for a walk around the promenade deck and afterward sat on the comfy deck chairs with our audiobooks.

Our girls with their favorite waiter, Bic Mac from the Philippines. He is so cool, always hi-fiving them when we meet on the ship.

Around lunchtime we went looking for the kids. Kim was still at the pool. Rhodé had checked herself in at Club HAL and was busy playing with lots of other kids. We decided to have lunch at Tamarind. Tamarind is an Asian specialty restaurant only on Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam so it was new for us. But boy, what a huge enrichment it is. We had excellent hot soup and salad as starters and dim sum, Japanese pastries and fried rice as an entree. This lunch menu is the same for everyone, the only choice to make is desert. We picked the Green Tea Tiramisu as desert. Wow! We were already excited for dinner since we had booked at Tamarind.

We spent the hours between lunch and tea on our balconies (we had a verandah stateroom). It was nice and warm. At 3:00 p.m. we had Dutch Tea (High Tea with Dutch pastries, delicious teas and strawberries dipped in chocolate). Then, again, a couple of relaxing hours around the pool. We love these sea days. Just eat and relax… and enjoy a great piña colada.

Dinner was at Tamarind. We enjoyed our Tamarind lunch so much earlier in the day, but dinner was also really great. We both had the Satay Sampler, I had the ribs and Jolanda had sushi and then duck with rice. It was so worth the extra charge (only $15 per person).

We met the ship’s photographers again for casual photos and then on to the show. Tonight, comedian Jonathan Clark was performing. Great impressions and stand-up comedy. Best show ever, we laughed until it hurt. After seeing his impression of “I Will Survive” (the hearing-impaired karaoke version) there is no way that I can listen to Gloria Gaynor’s version without thinking back to this show.
